Free Ringtones for the Iphone – How to Work Around Apple’s Fee

Neal Hamou asked:

The ultimate in mobile phone customization is the creation and utilization of mobile ringtones. This has become increasingly popular among iPhone and iPhone 3g users mainly because users create ringtones based off of their existing library. The popular iPhone by Apple, has a built-in music library known as iTunes which allows users to download music and video files via their computer or the internet. Once the files are in the iTunes music library, users can then create personal ringtones using whatever song or sound file they wish.

But here is where it gets tricky! iTunes requires users to purchase the ringtone sequence even if they already own the song. So how is it possible to get free ringtones? Well to solve that problem there are two fairly well-known applications that are used, iToner and iPhoneRingtoneMaker. iToner is a ringtone manager for Mac users, while iPhoneRingtoneMaker is run using Windows. Both applications cost $15, hopefully less than the amount of ringtones users are planning on uploading. According to a recent article posted by Wired on September 12, 2008, the most recent iTunes update appeared to have crippled iPhoneRingtoneMaker for some users however, iToner seemed to remain functional.

Aside from purchasing those applications, users can still pay a single dollar and avoid the entire headache associated with trying to get free ringtones. With that said, it has been my experience that many users find it difficult to set their desired ringtones. A simple step by step guide can be found in AppCraver’s troubleshooting section with information on how to create ringtones on the iPhone.

If you feel that paying a dollar per ringtone just isn’t cutting it, check for updates on AppCraver to see if current applications still work or to find new applications that will let users create free ringtones.

How to Upload And Set New Ringtones For Your iPhone

For those of us who are the proud owners of the iPhone, setting our favorites songs as a ring tone is like icing on the cake. Now let’s suppose someone is really satisfied by the features, looks etc. of this newly acquired gadget of his, but paying extra for setting a song as a ring tone is like spoiling the party. Apple, the iPhone manufacturer charges you $2 per song in order to set it as a ring tone. This includes $1 for the song itself, and an extra dollar for converting that song into the ring tone. Now, for someone who is a music freak and has a vast collection of songs that they want to set as a ring tone, this can turn out to be quite a expensive headache.

So, how about an idea which helps you to set your favorite song as a ring tone, without having to pay for it? Amazing isn’t it? You could set as many songs as you want. All that’s involved is a little bit of tinkering. For those of us who use Windows and Mac as Operating Systems, it will work perfectly fine. There are many softwares available on the internet which allow you to do this and the best part being, that everything is free and legal as well! Now, all you need to get started is an iPhone, the iTunes software, and a PC that uses Mac or Windows as an operating system.

First of all, you should open the iTunes player. From the library, select and pick the song that you want as a ring tone. Now, one needs to choose the part of the song they want as the tone, as we all want our ring tones to be something we like to listen all the time. Now you need to note the time duration of the chosen part, the start time, and the time at which it should be stopped. Afterward you should press the right click button on the song, and select the option get info. From there the tab named options needs to be selected. From there, just type the start time of the ring tone in the box right after start time. This should be in the format minute: second. For example, 3:34. Similarly, repeat the exercise for stop time as well.

To make a ring tone of about 40 seconds is advisable. Now click on the OK button. Now go to the song again and select the option that converts the current selected media into AAC format. This will take a few minutes. A duplicate version will be created. Now right click on the ring tone again and delete it. Next, click on the keep files button. Now, search the file that you just created. It will most probably be located in the iTunes folder. The file format would be .m4a. Now, from the Tools Folder Options, you need to change the file format from .m4a to .m4r.

A simple double click, when done slowly, would also do it though. Another method is to rename the file in case of Windows, and get info for those who use Mac OS. The system will automatically warn you about the change in the file format. You can choose to ignore that. Now, double-click on the newly created ring tone file. The iTunes player will add the particular media in the ring tones category in the iTunes library. Now, just connect the iPhone and sync that ring tone.

Not only does it save you a buck or two, it saves time and gives you your whole music collection to choose from!

Ring Tones for Iphone

Grigoriy Anoshenko asked:

Apple has always prided itself in developing systems and software that attract the unconventional segment of the masses. And therefore, it comes as no surprise that they have gone a long way in personalising the mobile phone ring tones for their iPhone; taking it beyond mere personalisation and giving the users complete authority with its usage and ownership. At a price, of course.

iTunes users now are the privileged ones to have been given an opportunity to customise original sound tracks and other universal tracks to be able to create their own mobile phone ring tones for their iPhone. This new opportunity has the iPhone equipped with the iTunes ring tone maker that allows the users to choose from over half million songs made available through the iTunes Store. Users can purchase any song for 99 cents from the library, that is marked with a bell indicating that it can be converted into a ring tone. Once the purchase is made, the track can be played at full length and the user has the creative freedom to choose any portion of the song, add special effects such as fade in and fade out. The final length of the desired ring tone must be of 30 seconds or less and the user is ready to download the ring tone on to his/her iPhone. The cost of purchasing this custom made ring tone is another 99 cents, thereby taking the total cost of a ring tone for the iPhone to $1.98. Apple is touting this as a cheaper option to the $2.49 for mobile ring tone purchases through other providers. The final step in the acquisition of this custom made ring tone is to sync the iPhone to the system.

Although, industry experts are continuously arguing about the cost effectiveness of this feature, users are clearly not too impressed. One of the common grouses of users is the inability to comprehend why should they be made to cough up money for a song they have already paid for before. The fact that a particular track is available in their library to purchase and convert into a custom ring tone clearly demonstrates that they have already paid for that track once and that’s the reason it is sitting in their library. At $1.98 it is unarguably more affordable than other providers, but users are miffed about the fact that Apple’s marketing gimmick requires interested users to pay 100% of the song price AGAIN for a 30 second sound clip. There is a lot being said about the legality of playing sound tracks on one’s iPhone, and according to reports some views have been expressed to the effect of just manually turning on the iPod, scrolling to a song, and hitting play on it, every time the iPhone rings or vibrates to alert a call or a message! Just because it is legally right to do so and users are not willing to shell out an extra dollar to give the computer the authority to do it.

Quite understandably, research shows several articles on the web, discussing ways to work around it. Some people have suggested just purchasing the iToner for $15 and then converting multiple songs to ring tones, rather than paying a dollar each time a ring tone for the iPhone is desired. Various forums are dedicated to such activities and one of them suggests the probability of obtaining a cost free ring tone for the iPhone directly from the iTunes by just changing the extension of the file. Purchased ring tones within the iTune library have a .M4R extension and therefore any music file with the extension AAC needs to be manually changed to .M4R before it can show up in the library. Just jump to the last step and sync your iPhone and the job is done!

With these rumours doing the rounds, it will not be long before Apple comes up with another marketing strategy that not only combats this but also placates their irate customers.

Iphone Upgrade Rumour

John Gray asked:

Many customers that have purchased the iPhone have been pleased with its stylish looks and touch screen technology, but have been disappointed by some of its features. Fear not iPhone users help is at hand, and it’s been heard through the grapevine that Apple have the all the answers!

Rumours have been sparked about an upgrade by Apple to the firmware in the iPhone.

A major disappointment to the iPhone was the fact that you can only text one person at a time as it does not have a multiple text feature. The new upgrade will resolve this problem and is possibly the best part of the upgrade.

The upgrade will also allow Google maps to locate you with just one click by using cell tower triangulation.

You will also be able to allow icons to be rearranged by drag and drop with the added extra of being able to include bookmarks to your favourite websites and pagination (the ability to scroll through different homepages).

Unfortunately Apple has yet to confirm if or when the upgrade (1.1.3) will be released. In the meantime iPhone users will have to make do with the iPhones stylish looks and tolerate some of its more basic features.

When the upgrade is released it would be an added bonus if it allowed stereo Bluetooth support, gave the ability to copy and paste information/text from a website into an email, and adding a louder ring tone would be helpful. I think the upgrade needs upgrading already!!
